Since its beginnings the main purpose of the film industry has been to entertain the viewer. To do this, motion picture experts, create scenes with spectacular stories and dialogue. However, it is the soundtrack (music background), the essential element that manages to captivate the audience.
If it is a film set in the past, the use of a soundtrack, would help to make it look realistic. An example of this, is “Somewhere in Time” directed by Jeannot Szwarc in 1980. It tells the story of a man who travels through time, specifically to 1912, and meet the woman he had fallen in love with through a photograph. It was its track, composed by John Barry that made the movie successful.
On the other hand, it is the emotion of the character, one of the most relevant aspects of a film. Thus, using music to express a feeling in a specific scene is very important. Such is the case of "Carol", a romantic drama directed by Todd Haynes in 2015. It is an adaptation of the novel "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith that told the story of a two women romance in New York City in the 1950s. Carter Barwell, composed and obtained the copyrights of the soundtrack, which expressed in an intense way, what the characters felt by living a forbidden love.
Another example is the soundtrack composed by Daniel Hart “A Ghost Story”, and American drama and fiction directed by David Lowery in 2017 presented at the Sundance Film Festival. The roll of the soundtrack was indispensable, since he managed to express the feelings of the main character, a musician who lives with her wife in a haunted house, where a ghost constantly scares them. It was his desperation in the story, that lead him to compose the track “ I get overwhelmed”. The audience stream it so much, that it was positioned as one of the best songs used in a film.
