“Caruso” the song of a sad love

“Caruso” the song of a sad love.

By Montserrat Garvalena

Caruso is a song composed in 1986 by Lucio Dalla. This song is inspired by the story of Enrico Caruso, a famous Italian tenor.

Caruso was sick of throat cancer, and passed his last days in the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, the same place where Dalla heard the story.

Caruso in his last days and despite his illness, he gave singing lessons to a young lady. Which he was hopelessly in love with.

One night, Caruso full of love and sorrow, sang for the girl, declaring his love. His voice attracted the fishermen boats, which illuminated the dark night. That same night, Caruso got worse and after two days, he passed away. It was his love confession the inspiration of the song Caruso.

Te voglio bene assai (ti voglio molto bene)

ma tanto tanto bene sai

è una catena ormai

che scioglie il sangue dint’e vene sai (nelle vene).

I love you very much

but so, so much, you know.

It is a chain, by now

that dissolves the blood inside the veins.
